Modification authorities in India - DC DESIGN


DC Design is an Indian design firm from Mumbai which is noted for their concept cars and prototypes. The firm, founded in 1993, is headed by designer Dilip Chhabria, and under a contract with Ford Motor Company built the first Aston Martin AMV8 Vantage prototype featured at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show.[1]
The company also builds custom special order vehicles,[2] such as a modified Porsche Cayenne coupe,[3] and a modified Rolls Royce coupe.[4] In August 2006, the company announced a partnership with Eximstar, an ETA Group company, to build a 500,000-square-foot (46,000 m2) production facility in Dubai.[5] The facility, scheduled to open in 2007, will produce custom luxury cars.

Dilip Chhabria is an Indian automobile designer. He is the founder of DC Design.

He is qualified in Transportation Design from the Art Center College of DesignPasadena, CaliforniaU.S. and worked with General Motors USA in their Design Centre. He also started his own auto accessory business and became one of the largest auto accessory manufacturers in India.[citation needed]

His company made the first prototype for the Aston Martin Vanquish which appeared in the James Bond movie Die Another Day.[1]
In 2006, Chhabria announced DCStar, tie-up between Eximstar (an ETA group company) and Dilip Chhabria Design Pvt Ltd. The company, to be set up in Dubai, will customize cars and other vehicles to suit customers' requirements.[2] He has designed Vanity Van for many stars such as Sanjay DuttShah Rukh Khan. He has also designed the car used in the movie Taarzan: The Wonder Car directed by Abbas-Mustan. In 2010 he designed a special version of Tata Nano. In August 2012 DC gave a complete external and internal make over to Mahindra XUV 500 with seating chairs made to recline up to 150 degrees and enhanced lounge lighting.[3] In August 2013 DC released the second generation of DC Lounge Fortuner, a special body kit for the Indian version of Toyota Fortuner. This was India's first full body altering kit for any car commercially available for 7.25 lakhs.[4]
He also runs a special Automobile Designing Institute called as DC - DYP in association with Dr D Y Patil University in PuneMaharashtra. His latest invention is 'DC AVANTI', the most economical sports car costs nearly 25,00,000 Indian rupees which is about 50k dollars.


DC Avanti is the first Indian designed sports car by DC Design, a firm headed by Dilip Chhabria. DC Design has previously been known as a tuner of other's vehicles; this will be their first foray into producing a complete automobile. Taking its name from the Studebaker Avanti of The Adventures of Tintin comics,[1] it was unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo Delhi as a two-seat sports car. It will initially be equipped with a mid-mounted, Ford-sourced, 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 261 bhp, A Honda-sourced V6 version with 394 bhp is planned for future release. Transmission is a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Avanti weighs 1562 kg (3440 pounds, or more than a Chevrolet Corvette), and features extensive use of aluminum. Its makers, who are based in Pune, claim the base model will hit 62 mph in less than seven seconds.[2] Plans are to release the car for sale in 2013.[3] The manufacturer plans to build 200 cars a year, hoping to raise output to 2000 cars a year in the future.
The DC Avanti is expected to be priced around INR 30 Lakhs,[2] approximately $56,000 in US dollars.[4]




he Toyota Innova is a Toyota-designed Compact MPV i.e. being less than 4,600 mm (181.1 in) in length as per the European system of size classification, produced in Indonesia under supervision by Toyota Astra Motor since 2003. As with Toyota Kijang, which it replaced, the Toyota Innova is produced and first marketed in 2004 in Indonesia. Toyota Innova is part of Toyota's IMV program together with the Hilux Vigo pickup truck and the FortunerSUV. Its official name in Indonesia is Toyota Kijang Innova, while for other countries it is Innova.

A modified car consist of any of the components associated with car tuning, however common upgrades include replacing the standard factory issue wheels with aftermarket alloy wheels, usually of a larger diameter to improve the aesthetics; lowering the suspension of the car to give it a more aerodynamic, stable look by replacing the springs (often in conjunction with shock absorbers) or torsion bars; replacing the existing exhaust system with one with less gas-flow restriction, louder and deeper sound and often small improvements in performance (due to exhaust gas-flow rate). Other common upgrades include the installation of a short shifter as well as an aftermarket shift knob, or a performance oriented Weighted Gear Knob. Common non-mechanical upgrades include a cars audio system; though not performance oriented, are nevertheless a very common-place modification. This includes upgrading the head unit itself, and upgrading and/or installing additional speakers.
Significant modification to a car could involve adding a fiberglass body kit to improve the aesthetics, a complete respray to a more unusual, distinctive and noticeable colour and finish, increasing the engine performance with ugraded components such as a high-flow air filter, additional components such as turbocharger, supercharger, Nitrous oxide kits, aftermarket cylinder heads or porting and polishing of O.E.M. heads which require retuning of electronics (later model vehicles - fuel injected) and modifications to vehicle sub-frames to accommodate additional horsepower caused by said changes. Traditional customizing methods, more common when modifying classic cars to create cars such as Hot rods, include roof chopstwo door stretchessuicide & lambo doorschanneling and lights, trim and sheet metal from another car. Sectioning is also used sometimes.

The essence of modification of a tuner car is an attempt to extract the greatest possible performance—or the appearance of high performance—from the base motor vehicle through the addition, alteration or outright replacement of parts. Although this largely involves modifying the engine and management systems of the vehicle to increase the power output, additional changes are often required to allow the vehicle to handle this power, including stiffened suspension, widened tires, better brakes, improved steering and transmission modifications such as the installation of a short shifter. Although largely invisible from outside the vehicle, certain modifications such as low profile tires, altered suspension, and the addition of spoilers can change the overall appearance of the car, As well as adding downforce to increase traction.
Engine tuning is the process of modifying the operating characteristics of an engine. In a typical engine set-up, there are various mechanical and electronic elements such as the intake manifold, spark plugs,Mass air flow/ Volume air flow, etc. Modern engines employ the use of an ECM to provide the best balance between performance and emissions. Via the OBD communications protocol, the electronically controlled aspects of the engine can be modified in the process known as 'mapping'. Mapping can either be performed by changing the software within the ECU (chip tuning via firmware modification), or by providing false data via plug-in hardware (piggybacking). Mechanical components can also be replaced, such as turbochargers or superchargers.
Other standalone engine management systems are available. These systems replace the factory computer with one that is user programmable.
Poorly executed modifications can have a detrimental effect on performance as well as mechanical and electronic components. An example would be the use of an air compressor such as a turbocharger to increase the volume of air used in power stroke of the otto cycle. In a typical chemical reaction, the air-fuel ratio must be a minimum of 14:1 (see Stoichiometry). If higher ratios are used, higher pressures and temperatures are observed in the cylinders. Depending upon the build of the engine, such operating parameters can lead to premature failure such as warped cylinder heads and walls (temperature related), cracked connecting rods and crankshafts (excessive torque applied), engine seizing and blowouts.

Blood to Blood Modification

The term modified car is given to any vehicle that has been altered from its original state; most commonly with aftermarket components. The term denotes a car that has been significantly altered for the purpose of appearance or for increased engine or handling performance, the process by which this is carried out is known as car tuning. The term is generally used in reference to modern vehicles that have been altered, and not typically used to describe other types of modified cars such as Hot rods, however the definition can include this, as well as any other car that is not in its original form as was purchased from the manufacturer. Modified cars are commonly small hatchback and coupe cars such as superminis and small family cars.

Body kits.:

body kit or bodykit is a collection of exterior modifications to a car, typically composed of front and rear bumpersside skirtsspoilers, paint jobs, and sometimes front and rear side guards and roof scoops. There are many companies that offer alternatives to the original factory appearance of the vehicle. Body kits components are designed to complement each other and work together as a complete design. Despite this, the 'mix and match' approach is often seen on cars, where the front of one body kit will be matched with the rear of another, for example.
Automotive body kits are usually constructed of either fiberglasspolyurethaneapplications (automative part  , or in some cases carbon fiber. Fiberglass is cheap and widely available, although it can crack upon impact. Polyurethane is popular because it is flexible and thus more resistant to damage. Carbon fiber body kits are rare, due to the cost of the materials, and are rarely seen on street-legal vehicles. Further details found below:
Fiberglass (FRP) composite is very light and is extremely strong according to its weight/strength ratio. FRP material is easier to fix, if necessary.
Polyurethane (PU) is popularized in the manufacturing of some of the highest quality aerodynamic components/body kits ([kits]) for varying automobiles (car, truck, and SUV) on the market. These components include bumpers, side skirts, roll pans, and wiper cowls. Polyurethane allows production of durable components unlike the conventional fiberglass (FRP) that can easily break upon impact. Polyurethane is highly flexible therefore more resistant to damage. Including durability, these body kits when produced by a reputable manufacturer, exhibits less imperfections, are easy to install and maintain, and are affordable. [5] Super-Polyurethane (SPU) is a much stronger- weather proof polyurethane material researched and developed and used exclusively by JP Tokyo and JP USA, Co. When fiberglass body kits begin to show cracks, chips from usual wear and tear, a well manufactured polyurethane components have similar durability to a factory installed bumper. As mentioned above, when produced by a reputable manufacturer, tend to have less pinholes and casting imperfections. Flexibility of polyurethane makes them easy to work with. Installation can be completed individually as a "do-it-yourself" project, or can be done by a professional. Maintenance is minimal on many body kits. Pricing varys by manufacturer, but is kept in an affordable range. Although they has many good traits, polyurethane body kits too have their downfalls. Fiberglass or carbon fiber components are lighter in weight than most polyurethane kits. Polyurethane, again is flexible but more material and thickness is most often needed to keep adequate stiffness for road use. For drivers seeking speed for a high performance vehicle, this can become a problem. Also, unlike fiberglass, polyurethane cannot be patched or repaired. Though it is much harder to damage, if damage did occur, the entire component must be removed and replaced. There are varying options when purchasing polyurethane kits. XenonJP USA Co, and Kaminari, are reputable polyurethane components manufacturers.
All consumers must be aware of lower quality replicas on the market.
Factory-fitted body kits are now becoming more common, perhaps in response to the growth of the aftermarket tuning industry in the late 1990s and onwards. Many manufacturers now work in-house with their motor sport divisions to develop styling upgrades.

Car tuning.:
Cars have always been subject to after-market modification. The golden age of car tuning was the decades between World War II and the beginning of air pollution restrictions. Both moderate and radical modification have been commemorated in the popular songs Hot Rod Race and Hot Rod Lincoln. The names of Abarth and Cooper appear on models styled after the cars they modified. Cosworth went, with support from Ford, from modifying English Ford Flathead engines for Lotus Sevens to dominating Formula One.
In the 1970s and 80s, many Japanese performance cars were never exported outside the Japanese domestic market. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, grey imports of Japanese performance cars, such as theNissan Skyline,[1][1][2][3] began to be privately imported into Western Europe and North America. In the United States, this was in direct contrast to the domestic car production around the same time, where there was a very small performance aftermarket for domestic compact and economy cars; the focus was instead on sporty cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette, or on classic muscle cars.
Because of their light weight and the increasing availability of low-cost tuning equipment, economy and compact cars exhibit high performance at a low cost in comparison to dedicated sports cars. As professional sporting and racing with such vehicles increased, so did recreational use of these vehicles. Drivers with little or no automotive, mechanical, or racing experience would modify their vehicles to emulate the more impressive versions of racing vehicles, with mixed results.

Types of tuning.:

Suspension tuning[edit]

Suspension tuning involves modifying the springs, shock absorbers, swaybars, and other related components of a vehicle. Shorter springs offer greater stiffness and a lower center of gravity at the possible cost of unwanted changes of suspension geometry. Stiffer shock absorbers improve the dynamic weight shifting during cornering and normally have shorter internals to stop them from bottoming out when shorter springs are used. Stiffer sway bars reduce body roll during cornering, thus improving the grip that the tires have on the surface by reducing suspension geometry changes caused by roll; this also improves handling response due to faster weight shifting (similar to stiffer springs.) The danger with overly stiff swaybars is the lifing of the inner wheel, which changes traction of that end at a discontinuous rate. By increasing the roll resistance of on end, weight transfer is concentrated at that end, causing it to slip more than the other. This effect is used to control the over/under steer characteristic as well as to reduce roll. Other components that are sometimes added are strut bars, which improve the body stiffness and help better maintain the proper suspension geometry during cornering. On some cars certain braces, anti-roll bars, etc., can be retrofitted to base model cars from sports models.
For offroad vehicles, the emphasis is on lengthening the suspension travel and installing larger tires. Larger tires, with or without larger wheels, increase ground clearance, ride over short obstacles and holes more smoothly, provide more cussioning and decrease ground loading which is important on soft surfaces.
These suspension modifications are in contrast to Lowriders with hydraulic or pneumatic suspensions. Lowriders use another type of suspension tuning in which the height of each individual wheel can be rapidly adjusted by a system of rams which, in some cases, makes it possible to "bounce" the wheels completely clear of the ground.

Body tuning[edit]

Body tuning involves adding or modifying spoilers and a body kit in order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle. Through the generation of downforce, cornering speeds and tire adhesion can be improved, often at the expense of increased drag. To lighten the vehicle, bodywork components such as hoods and rear view mirrors may be replaced with lighter weight components.
Often, body modifications are done mainly to improve a vehicle's appearance, as in the case of non-functioning scoops, wide arches or other aesthetic modification. Aftermarket spoilers or body kits rarely improve a car's performance. The majority, in fact, add weight and increase the drag coefficient of the vehicle, thus reducing its overall performance.
Increasing the wheel track width through spacers and wide body kits enhance the cars cornering ability. Lowering the center of gravity via suspension modifications is another aim of body tuning. Often, suspension tuners unfamiliar with spring dynamics will cut stock springs, producing a harder, bouncy ride. It is also common to lower the car too far, beyond the optimal height for performance, purely for appearance.
Competition cars may have light weight windows, or the windows may be completely removed, as auto glass adds significant weight high up. Plastic windows are much more vulnerable to scratches which reduces service life.

Tires[edit]

Tires have large effects on a car's behavior and are replaced periodically, therefore tire selection is a very cost-effective way to personalize an automobile. Choices include tires for various weather and road conditions, different sizes and various compromises between cost, grip, service life, rolling resistance, handling and ride comfort.

Electric conversions.:
Most conversions in North America are performed by hobbyists[3] who typically will convert a well used vehicle with a non-functioning engine, since such defective vehicles can be quite inexpensive to purchase. Other hobbyists with larger budgets may prefer to convert a later model vehicle, or a vehicle of a particular type. In some cases the vehicle itself may be built by the converter, or assembled from akit car.
A two-stage vehicle is a vehicle that has been built by two separate manufacturers. The result is a standard, complete vehicle.[4] In this process, vehicles may be converted by a manufacturer (as was done byFord Motor Company to create the Ford Ranger EV). Alternatively, in a process known as "third-party (power)trainization", an independent converter will purchase new vehicle gliders[5] (vehicles without a motor or related equipment) and then perform the conversion, to offer a two-stage vehicle.
In some countries, the user can choose to buy a converted vehicle of any model in the automaker dealerships only paying the cost of the batteries and motor, with no installation costs (it is called pre-conversion or previous conversion).
